Located at 140 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77007, the Art Car Museum is a privately run contemporary art museum that celebrates the art of cars and other mobile contraptions. The museum emphasizes contemporary art and artists who have not been recognized by other cultural institutions. In addition to its permanent collection of automobiles, the museum features mobile exhibits and rotating art shows throughout the year.

The museum’s award-winning art car, Bat Wing, is a VW Cabriolet built from the ground up, adorned with metal spiderweb detailing. It also features haunting faces on the front and a spider on the back. The car’s inspiration came from a Bugatti Atlantic Coupe of the ’30s. The museum also features a collection of sculptures made from recycled materials. The museum’s other award-winning art car, Cigs Kill, was created by Alex Harrah to reflect his battle with COPD.

The Art Car Museum is also the home of the annual Houston Art Car Parade. This event began as a small gathering of artists in the early 1980s. The parade draws people from all over the country who drive in to Houston to enjoy the dozens of art cars that make it out on the street.

The museum’s permanent collection of cars includes some of the more elaborate art cars, such as a 1971 VW Karmann Ghia created by Shelley Buschur. The museum also showcases work by local artists like Harold Bourdier. In addition to the museum’s collection of art cars, it also features other forms of art, including works by local, regional, and national artists. In addition, the museum holds annual open call shows, which allow local, regional, and national artists to exhibit their work.
